FILEY REGATTA CANCELLED

It is with much regret that Filey Sailing Club has decided to cancel Filey Regatta this weekend (21-22 July). You are probably aware from the national news of the damage caused by flash floods at Filey on Wednesday afternoon. We have tried our best to find a way to run the Regatta despite the flood havoc, but there are too many factors working against us. The key factors are:

* Another severe weather warning for Friday afternoon and evening with further very heavy rainfall expected;
* Scarborough Borough Council have closed Filey Brigg campsite and withdrawn permission for the Club to use the camping field next to it because of the state of the ground;
* The roadway down to the Club is closed to vehicle traffic because of flood damage;
* Two way access on to the beach across the Coble Landing presents a hazard for pedestrians and is only possible if the Club indemnifies the Ports Authority; unfortunately our insurance doesn\\\'t cover that.

We are very sorry to disappoint the many sailors who were looking forward to sailing on the wonderful waters of Filey Bay, but the problems have proved insuperable. Our worry now is to stop as many people as possible making an unnecessary journey to Filey. If you could inform anyone you know who is intending to come, we would be very grateful. And ask them to spread the word, too, please. In the meantime in addition to an announcement on the FSC website we shall be ringing pre-booked competitors and trying to get announcements in the sailing press and class websites plus TV and radio where possible. The Regatta will be back in action next July (weather permitting!), and we look forward to welcoming back the many sailors who have discovered the usually sunny delights of Filey Bay.

Best wishes
