AC World Series

Post by WaveyDavey »

The Americas Cup World Series event in Plymouth starts this Saturday. I'd like to get there for a day, but not sure yet if that will happen. Depends in part whether the forecast looks likely to produce racing worth the journey. Any other Sprint sailors thinking of going?

If you don't go, its still worth watching the action on the AC YouTube channel (follow the "videos" link from http://www.americascup.com). They produced hours of coverage from the last event at Cascais - which is still available online. The racing highlights programmes are ok, but if you have the time its better to watch the full unabridged coverage (skipping the dull parts), then you can watch each whole race unfold from pre-start (reaching starts!) to finish.

Although there's no UK team, there are plenty of UK sailors to support. In particular, Team Korea's crew is 4/5ths GBR, including skipper Chris Draper and one-time Marconi cat sailor Mark Bulkeley as trimmer.

Enjoying this! Might need to upgrade my broadband package for the rest of the series, though. Great on-board footage.

Sadly I didn't get to Plymouth in person today - took the family out instead. Just got back in time to watch the speed trial live online. Will have to watch the race footage later.

The race footage is definitely worth watching. Three capsizes, one breakage and lots of action. Some good tips too - Mark is quite wrong about not holding on to the shroud - all of Russell Coutts' team today were holding on to something today (shroud, winch handle, tiller - whatever they could find!)

Was out having a blast of my own today in the 15. It was upriver racing today so we had some excellent flat-water reaching on the upper reaches of the Blackwater estuary.

Anyway, as a result I'm just catching up with today's AC action now. Great viewing. It looks completely full-on. Bearing away in a 15 at the top mark suddenly doesn't seem quite so daunting.

Doubt if the Olympics TV coverage at Weymouth next year will be anywhere near this quality. I really like the "A" and "B" streams uploaded afterwards, it feels as though you are actually on board. Only heard strong language once, when a Gennaker deployment failed due to a halyard problem. Closeup of capsize from the forward on-board camera is very amusing with lots of legs in the air. Nearly half-way through my monthly 10Gb. :o
Envious of your flat water reaching but not worth going all the way to Plymouth given the on-line feeds available, so right decision for you yesterday.
Still awaiting a comment from Mr Aldridge re: good practice and shrouds.
