How to fix corroded mast

Post by Avon »

Hi, after taking 40 minutes to right my fully inverted boat (sail no 1344) I discovered that the top section was flooded. Having now looked at the mast I see that it has corrosion holes on both sides. I’m thinking that a good way to repair it will be to epoxy glue 1.5mm aluminium plates over the areas. I wonder if anyone can comment on whether araldite will be ok or suggest the best glue for the job.

Many thanks.

That sounds serious. I would start by using duck tape. At least it will not catch on/ tear the sails like an aluminium plate would. It might give your mast a bit more life. It could give you time to save up for a replacement mast, even if it is second hand one. After all if your mast is the original it is 33 years old.

Hi Peter

Where are the holes? Are they at fixing holes? Can you post pictures?
