Yes John , it takes more layers of skin off using thinner rope , especially in a blow !
You should simply concentrate on keeping the leach vertical, which on a beat means sheeting 'block to block' if you can , and trimming the traveller in as much as you can handle . In a force 5+ , it would be quite normal to have the traveller almost fully out. Obviously you woudn't point as high but your extra speed trimmed this way would more than compensate for this, and you would find the boat easier to handle .
P.S. If you can't achieve 'block to block' , then you probably haven't got enough mast rake on, so move your shroud pins down one hole . This setting is usually better for strong winds anyway, and also reduces the likelihood of pitchpoling off-wind.

Hi John,
Ask George -he used an 8mm main sheet for a season or so. Great for light winds, I think! For the stronger stuff it can cut in the hands.
