North Devon Yacht Club at Instow is a beautiful place on the estuary of the rivers Taw and Torridge where it flows out into the Bristol channel. It is known as heaven in Devon and the winds and tides can really be something.

Instow has a fleet of 30+ Sprint 15s who all usually race in sport mode.

Local hot shots now include 2019 National Sports Mode Champion Fraser Manning, Young Gun Hector Bunclark, Anthony “Buzz” Gray, David Grant and Sam Heaton when he is allowed out to sail!

With a pack of very competitive sailors always snipping at their sterns, competition for places is always fierce. Keith Heason and Ian Mounce are the experienced pro’s and young future stars like Ben Penny, Dan Craner and Harry Gale, Instow can be a great place to sail, for their open regatta, just visiting for the weekend or a Nationals.

Liam Bunclark is fleet captain and will help you out if you want to ask advice, pay a visit, try out a Sprint 15 or are stopping by for a drink and a chinwag. Tel: 07977 560560. You can always be assured of a warm and friendly welcome when you visit Instow.

Visitors are always welcome to their Open Week where typically 60-70 boats participate, this is always in the first or second week in August. The Sprint 15 Fleet usually has some individual estuary races and three days of committee boat races where usually 10 boats + are racing.  When this club hosts the Nationals, it is not unusual to get 20 local boats on the water competing from experts to novices competing in their first Nationals.

There is a long sandy beach at Instow and is always busy during the summer with visitors. They are the biggest Sprint 15 Club in the South West.

DIRECTIONS TO INSTOW

Instow is between Barnstaple and Bideford on the B3233. At junction 27 on the M5 take the A361 to Barnstaple. At the first roundabout outside Barnstaple take the A39 to Bideford and follow the road towards Bideford and come off the A39 just before the new bridge that spans the river Torridge at Westleigh. Follow the signs to Instow (B3233) which is about one mile. On entering the village turn left onto Marine Parade and (NDYC) the Yacht club is on the left by the railway signal box.

INSTOW

The village has one 3* hotel, 4 pubs which all provide good food and an up market restaurant. The area is a tourist resort and in the Summer can be busy. Accommodation should be booked early to avoid disappointment.

Instow has a large sandy beach which affords good views of all Sprint 15 racing. The beach is also ideal for children and in the event of wet weather there is plenty of indoor activities close by to keep them happy or Johns Deli and Café is always a great place to grab a coffee and cake.
